Are You Suffering From Dry Eyes?

One of the most common complaints that we hear while examining patients is that of frequent watery, burning and somewhat itchy eyes.  People will often say that for no reason their eyes will just start to water.  While more common during the winter months when the windows are closed and the heat is on, these symptoms can occur during any season.  These symptoms are frequently caused by what is called "Dry Eye Syndrome."  This is more common with older age and is often worsened by the use of certain medications for conditions such as allergy, anxiety, high blood pressure and birth control.  It can also be the result of immune related diseases such as arthritis, lupus and Sjogrens Syndrome.  Dry Eye can be the result of an inadequate water layer in the tear film, or the result of a decreased lipid (fatty) layer that helps maintain the tear film from evaporating too fast.  As the population grows older, the incidence of Dry Eye is rising rapidly.  In order to help us more accurately diagnose the type of Dry Eye one may be suffering from, we have started using Keratograph technology.  This instrument help us better identify the underlying cause, measure its severity and utilize more specific and direct treatments.  These treatments vary from something as simple as warm compresses to lid therapy technologies to advanced, immune modulating medications such as Xiidra and Restasis.  Since implementing this technology, we have seen a typical range of symptom improvement of 50-90% in most cases.

If you think that you may be suffering from Dry Eyes, please let Dr. Wynne know at your next visit.
