Children’s Vision & Reading

Symptoms of reading-related vision problems can seem elusive and often go undetected by parents and teachers. Many of these children have passed pediatric vision screenings. Reading requires the integration of a number of different visual skills: visual fixation, accommodation or focus, binocular fusion, convergence, tracking, form perception, field of view and acuity. Because a combination of problems is usually at the root of a reading problem, all possible causes should be explored. While a basic children’s vision screening tests for only one of these skills (acuity), a comprehensive vision examination covers all of them. It is important that a well qualified Pediatric Optometrist provide these services.
